The Creston Valley Thunder Cats and Kimberley Dynamiters went head-to-head twice on the weekend, and each came away with a win.The Thunder Cats won first, when the Dynamiters visited Creston on Friday. They earned a 7-5 victory, despite being down 4-1 at the end of the first period, thanks to a goal by Trevor Forward in the first 30 seconds.
After two recent wins, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats pulled farther ahead of the Golden Rockets, who hold fourth place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.
With 41 points, the Thunder Cats are 11 points ahead of the Rockets, eleven behind the Kimberley Dynamiters and 13 behind the Fernie Ghostriders, whom they beat in two successive games on Dec. 28 and 31.
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats started off 2012 by winning their first game of the year, but things changed a bit on the weekend, when the Thunder Cats hosted the Spokane Braves on Friday and visited the Golden Rockets on Sunday.The Spokane game resulted in a 3-2 overtime win for the Thunder Cats, despite a slow start — also the cause of a loss to Golden.“They (Spokane) came out skating hard, and we came out not really knowing what we wanted from that game,” said head coach Bresnt Heaven.
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats earned five out of a possible six points this weekend, bringing them closer to the top of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division.The Thunder Cats now have 50 points, 10 behind the second-place Kimberley Dynamiters and 12 behind the Fernie Ghostriders. The Golden Rockets are in fourth with 32, and the Columbia Valley Rockies are a distant last, with seven.
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats were supposed to play three games on a weekend road trip, but the closure of the highway to Golden prevented the third game on Sunday. That, combined with players under the weather, resulted in no wins for Creston’s Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team.“We’re definitely getting banged up,” said Brent Heaven, head coach of the Thunder Cats, who won their two prior away games. “Three or four on the road trip were sick, and we had a few injuries.”
